It looks like these projects could really help each other out since they have a lot in common, but I’ve noticed some beef towards Stacker News. That’s my first question right there.
Also should the SN developers refrain from testing features that aren’t yet possible on nostr and align with what the rest are doing? Would that approach be more beneficial for nostr? Should the bitcoin community be strictly #nostronly? Can this ensure the success of nostr?
I think stepping outside the nostr bubble and coming up with fresh ideas is okay. As long as the SN folks aren’t causing trouble, it’ll probably do good for nostr.

SN does great on curating news content, sorting it by value, and creating community around content. Nostr does great creating decentralized identity for people and creating social connections via Twitter like stream of thoughts and notes.
reply
Agree. I think both have different use cases at the moment, even though they overlap and might find common ground in the future. Also, the Nostr protocol goes far beyond "Twitter-like" micro blogging, which its main use case so far. Hopefully SN will find a way to take advantage and benefit from all the amazing potential features of Nostr.

Why in the world would they do that?
reply
Hmmm, I was brought here from Nostr and I am soooo glad that I was! I struggle over there although I am going to put some more effort in. Here on SN I am able to write in the format that I like, the engagement is great and I can look for posts that I am interested in.
I can't see how SN could cause trouble? Although, fresh ideas are always met with some resistance I suppose

What is your opinion of Nostr?

Nostr at its current form is a great replacement for Twitter. SN is a great replacement for Reddit. These are not the same. The only difference I see is the Bitcoin only talk on SN versus Nostr but that can easily be solved by unfollowing people on Nostr.
It’s also good to keep in mind just how big the Bitcoin ecosystem is growing this cycle, the fact that there are now so many niche communities is awesome if your a pleb. Find your tribe and build, ignore the noise and focus on your north star.

I started with Nostr and moved to SN. The engagement is much better here.

What did you want to accomplish on Nostr?
reply
I wanted a place to be able to share things without having to worry about being banned. And from that standpoint Nostr succeeded. But I might as well be posting into the void for all the engagement I get. It really seems that unless you are a Bitcoin influencer or a Nostr dev you won’t get any attention.
reply
I don't know about you, but I've met some people on nostr and get enough engagement to be satisfactory. I'm not a dev or anything. Try commenting on popular posts and see if you meet people that way.

It's alright. I have a nostr profile, I occasionally check that for new stuff. I also occasionally check this website for new stuff.
They're just tools for discovery and discussion. It's nice to at least have an idea on the latest going-ons in the Bitcoin space.
reply
Both are cool
reply
They're such different beasts that I don't really understand why users of one would have a problem with the concept of the other. Like, in the Before Times, people used Reddit and Twitter and didn't have a problem with that.

As a Nostr person, I love stacker.news.
reply
They are just afraid of centralization.
reply
I have never observed negativity on nostr towards SN, but I have heard about it. I guess I don't spend a lot of time there. Can someone describe what's said and maybe post examples?
reply
Presumably they don’t like how SN is centralized
reply
But SN is totally something else than nostr.
reply
Yes. It's apples and oranges. Are they seen as competitors?
reply
Yes, of course. It's a web site. Do they think SN is slowing nostr's growth?
reply
No idea 🤷 I’m not a nostr person lol
reply
I find nostr basically unusable and I find very little good content there. There’s no way to find good content because you can’t sort popular posts to the top in any clients I’m aware of.
reply
To answer your question simply, why would Nostr people hate SN?
  • They aren't same.
  • They do not rely for content on each other.
  • They both are positive developments on Bitcoin.
  • One is outright media and the other one is a social media.
I don't see anything that a co existence for both can create any problem in future.
reply
I never liked Twitter style of social media. It's designed around self attention. Not great for discussions imo.
Stacker news is the place to be
reply
Eh. There's space for both microblogging and discussion in the world.
Do you also think that blogging is self-centered?
reply
Not saying one must die. But public blogging is just seeking engagements. Discussions have topic and everyone with valuable input wouldn't be drown out.
reply
This is the worst place to ask this, of course the answer from stacker.news users will be no
reply
Kind of a silly place to ask this. Anyone who is here and is aware of nostr are likely going to say no, because they themselves don't hate SN obviously.
reply
I use both.
reply
I like both. Very different experiences. Stacker News seems better for learning and is more specialised.
reply
Why should they hate stacker news? 🤔
reply
"Hate"?

Nostr sucks

I actually have never used nooostr. What is it? Anyone care to explain?
