I know the zap button is removed from the UI in this case. I wonder if this is also enforced at the API layer? Haven't checked the code

It's possible that's the case. If someone enters the post before the comment is deleted, the "zap" button is available. If no verification is done at the time of the zap, the zap is successful. Good observation!
