Yall change your own oil? Im the wussy type that changes it every 5,000 miles and uses OEM like Im told to.

But it's a soothing experience. That feeling of taking care of something that can last.

Buck ran a lot better after 15 fresh quarts and a new filter.

OEM is nice. I prefer full synthetic, depending on the vehicle.

I dont know enough of about why full synthetic is better than regular and when to use it. I know I could look it up, but I only focus on what I need to know for my ride.

Not all that critical for liquid cooled engines running low power applications (cars and trucks). It might last a few thousand miles more between oil changes.

Air cooled engines, and engines running >50% power for extended periods benefit more from synthetic oils. Most consumer “synthetic” oils are not synthetic, they are group III base stock conventional refined oil. The courts ruled that synthetic was a marketing term, and now everyone can call group III oils synthetic. They are still good oil, and better than group I/II oils, and probably perform as well as real synthetic oils in many applications.

“Real” synthetics are used in the most demanding applications, large aircraft piston engines and jet turbine engines. These will almost invariably be group V synthetic ester base oils. If it’s not $80/gallon, it’s probably not technically synthetic oil.

I've done it a few times. I was mostly interested in learning how to do it more than anything.

It is soothing though much like repairing a car. It gave me some sense of control over the complex machine.

I ran the numbers a few years ago when I had a civic, I was only saving about 10 bucks if I did it myself so I used to just pay for it to be done.

But now I do it myself, every buck saved is more sats.

Growing up my dad taught me and I did it until I could afford to have someone else do it. Haven't changed the oil myself in years. I do enjoy doing small repairs which typically are more expensive for a mechanic to do though. Stuff that doesn't require special tools.

The feeling of knowing how stuff works and how to fix some things is great though. Highly recommended.

I change my own, using an OEMTOOLS extractor. Takes me 15 minutes. VW used to recommend Castrol Euro formula and I go with it. Did an analysis from Blackstone Labs at 160K miles, and it says I can go 12k-15k, but change the filter at 10,000.

I recommend the oil analysis.

Yes, have done that, my father has a garage outside city. Otherwise would be hard for me to do that myself living in city centre.

I find it hard to justify when the shop nearby does it for $35. I've done it a few times with a friend but that's pretty much it.

I find it cathartic, the real question is where do you draw the line? Is an oil change the most you'll do? I draw the line at transmission fluid, I don't have the equipment to take apart my car that much
