Cost Of Living Around The World In 2020

At MoveHub, we’ve taken the data from Numbeo's 2020 Cost of Living Index and made it really beautiful. To create the Index, Numbeo collates a huge amount of information from thousands of worldwide contributions, focusing on consumer costs and prices. There are nearly fifty factors, ranging from meals at mid-range restaurants to gym memberships, bottles of wine and cappuccinos. A quick guide to our maps: green is cheap and pink is pricey.
I'm not sure if the info is right. Venezuela is a very expensive place to live, prices in many items and services are the same as in Spain. And the salaries are way lower.

The data is from 2020. It could also be the way the index is calculated.

Argentina was way cheaper than Brazil en 2020. Things are starting to change now.
reply
I assume you live there. Do you think it's already the effect of Milei's policies or does it have other causes?

Yes, the new government diminished subsidies and price controls. Bus rides in Buenos Aires (which are heavily subisidized) went from ARS 25 (USD 0.02, ) to ARS 260 (USD 0,25) and gas went up from USD 0,25/litre to USD 0,80/litre. So everything is still dirt cheap af but not as much as before. Compare that to São Paulo's R$4.4 (usd 0,9) bus rides and R$5.75/L (usd 1.15) gas prices.

interesting… why are Ghana and Uruguay so expensive relative to the continents they are on?
reply
Good question! The reasons can be varied and I'm not sure either. But where the charts were taken from, there are some notes on these countries.
Uruguay:
South America is pretty cheap across the board (especially in the Northwestern areas) but Uruguay is the world’s 30th most expensive country – hence the pink blotch halfway down the continent. However, you get what you pay for down there; Uruguay has some of South America’s highest levels of peace, press freedom, democracy and GDP growth. On another note, its population is also vastly outnumbered by cows; there are nearly 3.5 head of cattle per person.
Ghana:
Based on the countries we have the data for, you can see that Africa is easily the least expensive of all the world’s continents. The steepest prices can be found in Ghana, which is surprising considering South Africa’s huge popularity as a global tourist destination. Ghana ranks 38th in the world table, with the second highest being Mauritius at 49th.

would love to hear any guesses from you (or other stackers) on why these two countries are outliers

I can't pinpoint specific causes, but I'd say it's probably related to the economy. If you look at the other countries, you'll find that the most expensive countries are the most developed. Is it growing pains?

By this maps alone, I wouldn't want to live in North America or Europe, the cost of living is too high is this areas

Let’s ask those in India who earn like 5$ a day how cheap things are.

It would be interesting to see this chart with the cost adjusted for the income. I'm sure it would look completely different.

Nice. It'd be interesting to see how this has changed since 2020 — So much has happened in the last four years! It's a shame we don't have data for the African countries using the CFA currency.

I actually tried to find these charts with up-to-date figures but couldn't find them

This situation is extremely relative. For example: Prices in Turkey seem to be cheap. But there is a serious housing problem. In recent years, we have had to shelter 15 million refugees. An ordinary Turkish citizen used to be able to buy a house with his salary, but now this has become impossible. The most expensive gasoline in the world is here. Meat prices are at unbelievable levels.

yes. the data should be interpreted with caution

What do there digits mean on the scale?
