This was well known, at least among those who don't get their news from the NYT. Hamas was Israel's insurance against a two state solution, not bc hamas didn't want it, but because on the contrary, they'd actually fight for Palestinians. That makes it easier to portray israeli genocide as "defense". narrative foil.

It is highly likely that Israel heavily contributed to the Hamas's foundation at 2007. They had to invent a new type of enemy.
