Seems like this first iteration of lightning will need to go through 'registered custodians'. Custodians that comply with banking licenses, and so forth, like ZBD, Osmo, Strike, etc.
What I'd like to see are Wallets that are interfaces ( A bit like what Fedi is doing), but which connect to different node providers, that do the custody for you. And nodes have a reputation system (on Nostr), and can specify which jurisdictions they would like to operate in.
Again, A fedi-like interface but where you select which lightning custodial nodes become your custodians. User decides which node to receive custody from, based on available liquidity and reputation of the node runner. Like with Nostr, anyone can be a node runner.
This provides a modular approach to running and using lightning, which is also more censorship resistant.

No. You started something really nice with OBW and Hosted channels (Poncho). @hampus and @evankaloudis are starting also something nice with their Dunder and Olympus LSP .
This could move forward easily the use of LN wallets. I just posted on SN this guide: #329312 I wrote in the past more guides about how to be a LN bank for family and friends: https://darthcoin.substack.com/p/bitcoin-private-banks-over-lightning
I even wrote a guide how to use your solutions with HC: https://github.com/Darth-Coin/Poncho-OBW-testing
But you abandon these wonderful projects and let users in a failure. Sad, really sad, I am completely sad because of your abandon... Quitters do not have my respect anymore...

Completely disagree. Bitcoin and its builders are like an immune system. There will be a positive reaction to this. This is likely the wake-up call we needed.
There should always have been more focus on products being non-custodial and permissionless from Day 1, instead of it being an afterthought or a ‘future feature’. It will soon be a ‘must-have’.
We don’t even have a solution to those useless ordinals clogging the base layer. And remember we haven’t even onboarded that many users in the grand scheme of things this year. Lightning is the only scalable solution to navigate around those high fees currently and nothing else comes close right now, in allowing people to transaction speedily, at low fees, using permissionless Bitcoin.
Telling people to abandon ship is like telling them to swim home from miles out at sea.
reply
We shouldn't delude ourselves. Lightning doesn't scale indefinitely.
Not everyone in the world can ave a channel for example.
Transaction throughput in my understanding scales pretty well.
reply
Well, you can jump off ship any time. Others will stay.
Lighting is solving my real problems on a day to day basis right now. For me, it's not some theoretical design that is pending tests to ensure if it's workable.

Always full of hilariously bad takes.

Stirring the pot, getting us all riled up.
Not trying to be rude here.
honestly i never thought graphic + fashion design was so taxing. in the last few weeks, i feel fried.
but in the same way writing code, designing architecture is the same.
You think you have a great design and a great plan and architecture but then the more you look at it and everyone has to give their stoopid or not so stoopid opinion and then it looks like a hot mess...
Then i start feeling like fiatjaf and saying things like "if we can't have custodial, we can't have it at all"
And then, for every 1 design that I put out there, there are about 8-9 that are discarded.
it is the same way with writing code.
in code + architecture its like
for every 1 design that makes it out there, there's about 100-1000 ideas that are discarded on the cutting table.....
imagine how frustrating life must be like this, if its like it every day,
a person just gets annoyed and ends up writing sentences like fiatjaf.

Nothing stopping collaborative custody between users. Still not illegal for me to shares my funds with my neighbour. Need to make sure I trust him though :)

Also another aspect that many ignore: govs are accusing these bitcoin custodians of "running a business without a license for money transferring".
But what is Bitcoin in govs perspective (not in plebs perspective)? An asset, a security, an investment etc. So why then is considered "money"?
Even if they will consider it money, their laws about "money transferring" refer only to legal tender. Legal tender have way another definition. If they would try to put Bitcoin inside the "money transfer" law, then anything else could be considered money, even shells, rocks, nails, bricks etc... That means banning all trades.
I wonder when this stupidity will be taken into a court and shame the govs for this idiocy.
BTW, I don't give a shit about what govs says and do, I just use Bitcoin as I please. They have no power over my own money as a living man (not a shitizen).

I think that the outcome is like David vs Goliat, but Goliat is a smoke screen. You have a branch of the goverment bulling you, if you want to confront them, you need to spend time and value as a one person effort, in the other said they just hope that this don't goes any further because as you said "That means banning all trades". Rule by fear, the state mantra.

Rule by fear, the state mantra.
Damn right!

eCash mints are looking a lot more attractive now as a custody option

If we can't run lightning nodes then it is better to abandon Lightning entirely.
Well, LSPs are definitely helping to onboard the app store generation. We all like to see the adoption timeline projected into the future at a steep gradient. Reality, on the other hand, takes us back to basics.
rule 1. Not your keys.. rule 2. Don't trust.. rule 3. Not your node, not your rules

Lightning is just a protocol for batching txns over time. Custodians certainly make the most txns.

The truth is that custodial nodes are popular.
The community likes to pretend it's just about ease of use in products/services or onboarding newbies until they have their own nodes. But that's not the truth. When the world hyperbitcoinizes your mom or her neighbor won't want to have their own node.
We have talked a lot about on-phone nodes and watchtowers and cloud setups with private keys on phone and many other theoretical setups. But none of ideas have become mainstream in the community yet.
I don't want to be negative because I'm sure this problem will for sure be solved. Electricity had unsolved engineering challenges when it was 15 years old, the steam engine was for sure not perfected when it was 5 years old. And Lightning is still young. Let's be patient and optimistic.

Can't have custodians? What happened?

Presumably this is motivated by Wallet of Satoshi's announcement to halt operations in the US.

The Core of Fiat is black box central bank custodians. -then we get slightly better (not much) as we abstract the layers, personal debt rates, interest bonds, ACH, digital cash apps, cash.
With Bitcoin the Core is totally secure and auditable. -then we progress through abstraction very far up to the “ACH” and even the Cash levels with the same security and sovereignty. At the edges we might have a few grey boxes, but competition will drive improvement.
Our money system is completely inverted/flipped around by peer to peer digital cash. Or you can say it’s been untwisted from fiat.
I don’t think federations or custodians are a problem. If there were no option other than using their services- like if we were giving up on lightning- then that would be the issue.
Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good!
And also you can’t comply your way out of tyranny
