I have an idea that might already be implemented but maybe not. I’m interested in feedback.
There are many Bitcoin resource lists our there. Some examples are:
- Bitcoin Canon
- Bitcoin Only
- Bitcoin Resources
- Bitcoiner.Guide
- Lopp’s Bitcoin Information & Resources
- Awesome Bitcoin
I maintain a list for my own purposes at https://github.com/sugarjig/bitcoin-resources.
All of these lists have the goal of curating links to high quality resources about Bitcoin. Each one has a certain focus, such as programming tools, end-user education, or philosophy, but the general idea is the same. There are some challenges with maintaining these lists, though:
- Culling stale links. Web resources sometimes change their URL or go defunct, so unless the maintainer is actively reviewing previous entries, these stale links will pile up.
- Culling out-of-date resources. Bitcoin changes so fast that what was once a valuable resource may no longer be a few years later.
- Determining the most valuable or important resources. Some resources are considered essential by the community. Think The Bitcoin Standard book or The Bullish Case for Bitcoin essay. Some are more minor works valued by many but not necessarily a huge number.
I have an idea floating around in my head to make a website that expands on the concept of a resource list and tries to address these challenges. It would allow users to submit links to resources and other users to up or downvote those links. It would not be unlike SN, but the intent is for a more static collection of links. The essential or canonical resources should float to the top. Anyone learning Bitcoin for the first time would have a good idea of the must reads. Others who are more advanced could explore items that are further down. As time goes on, stale and out-of-date resources can be downvoted or outright removed.
An important feature would be to categorize and/or tag the items to make them more browsable and discoverable. There could also be a discussion attached to each item.
I haven’t really thought through the economics of how this would work. Should users vote by paying sats? What would be the incentive for them to do so? Can users be paid by submitting links?
Sites like AlternativeTo are in the same vein but not quite the same.
It’s possible this could be a sub section of SN.
Does something like this already exist? Is there a non-Bitcoin tool that we can draw inspiration from?
What do you think?
