Classic coal! I'm german and my father came from Thuringia where the ''Bratwurst'' is something like a religion. I even have one of those BBQs here in Spain: https://www.thueros.de/
Charcoal Weber: 21" Kettle at home and GoAnywhere when camping. Propane never gets hot enough for a real char, and provides no smoke flavor. Webers are cheap and a great design.
I don't own a Traeger but many of my friends to. They say it is the cheat code to smoking. Now, if you are looking to grill I think that is a secondary function for most smokers like the Traegers. I haven't bought a smoker mostly due to space. I think I'll still want a open flame grill and I don't want a third device (already have a griddle).
Grilling steaks, burgers, and pretty much anything is fun and delicious. It is rewarding to prepare food for your family that they love to eat. I've found it very rewarding.
We used to own a Traeger. It is a cheat code to smoking. Smoking is lifestyle for sure.
We'd also use it for reverse searing steaks whenever we were feeding someone we wanted to impress or for high temp smoking/browning stew meat. The temperature control on our cheap model was wack though.
