Coincidentally, yesterday I fired up my Occulus Go (Facebook VR) for the first time in a long while. It literally wouldn't turn on and to do so required: I re-download the Occulus App on my mobile phone AND ALLOW ALL PERMISSIONS of data harvesting. I tried to deny something as simple as my location and it rejected my ability to use the headset.
Wait, what?
I HAD to agree to continue to use the headset. I couldn't believe I was being strong armed into this?! 🚩
Then Threads blows up later in the day. 🀯🧐
And if you haven't already, look at the Apps MASSIVE list of data harvesting permissions. It's obscene. πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ€¬
I know it's easier to just be complicit to this - and I'm a product of it too - I don't always use Tor cuz it's slower, and I like the convenience of Google Drive etc... but handing over all of our data to these companies - not people - companies, is a net negative for humanity.
They are diametrically opposed to people being free, autonomous and private citizens.
Bitcoin and Nostr, and more importantly the ETHOS that drives them, is IMPERATIVE to a better future for humanity.
I've never felt more convicted that Web5, self sovereignty and privacy/freedom is of utmost importance to safeguard and practice. βœ…οΈ
But it's going to be increasingly SO, SO hard to opt out and navigate over to these systems, protocols and spaces.
So, so many people are oblivious, indifferent of complicit with big data, big tech and big governemnt. πŸ˜’πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«
I'm trying to bear the responsibility of this but I can't help it.
Educating willing students, friends, people, plebs and strangers to these ideals (and consequences) is the most important thing any of us may do in our lifetime.

Why use hashtags? That’s a Twitter thing that means nothing here
And of course Threads wants your data. Meta’s whole business model depends on it. I can’t imagine buying a piece of dedicated hardware from them.

It was free, lol.

Sell it for sats? Lol

Before "educating", lead by example. get rid of the oculus, delete your facebook account, use simplex instead of whatsapp (or signal, or telegram)
moving away from facebook, google and microsoft takes time but it's totally worth it

I use and do all of the above. The occulus was free and I hadn't used it in ages.
The majority of the world uses IG and Facebook.... So it's a dilemma. Either not connect with plebs and normies for principles, or engage as little as possible to be able to connect. Change is slow unfortunately. But when people do get curious I'm ready to show and help with the decentralized things: Nostr, SimpleX, Bitcoin, Phoenix, Tor, Proton, etc. GrapheneOS is my next endeavor as well.
The point of my note is to move away from using these platforms. Or at least be aware of how much data they're harvesting.

To clarify, are you saying Signal and Telegram are ok alternatives or bad alternatives?
reply
bad alternatives
they both require a phone number, both have shitcoin links, both of them store all your data (you can't compile either and run on your own server) and they both leak metadata
Simplex is miles ahead
reply
Agree. I don't use Telegram or Signal either.
