TLDR: SimpleX (https://simplex.chat/) might be the most promising solution to simple, private, decentralized messaging yet!
So far, it does direct messages, group messages, calls, voice messages, and video calls, and everything is e2e-encrypted and can be self-hosted.
Like Nostr, SimpleX is neither P2P nor federated. It uses servers to relay messages. You define which server to use for receiving messages, and your contacts define which server to use for receiving messages. Every conversation is likely to use 2 different servers!
Servers are simple relays adhering to the SMP protocol; they do not store profiles, contacts, or groups, and they only retain messages until they are delivered to clients. Read about the SMP protocol here: github.com/simplex-chat/simplexmq/blob/stable/protocol/simplex-messaging.md
SimpleX was designed with Tor servers in mind, and since servers do not connect to each other, there are no issues with interoperability: simplex.chat/docs/guide/privacy-security.html#using-tor
Hopefully this can help get more people off Signal.

signal sucks. I have a copy in an old android profile and when I went to use it the other day, I was FORCED TO UPGRADE
Why should I upgrade?? I couldn't use the app at all. Signal is not free, Signal is not secure, Signal requires a phone number - which is all you need to know about their libertarian ideals.

Using it with my start 9 , very promising tech. First ive seen of a protocol / client combo that i can pitch to normie friends and its plug and play right at the initial download.

When Nostr relay?

Start9 already support Nostr relay?
If you run your own server, would you dictate the degree of image compression? Or is that limited by the SimpleX client and not something the server can control? I.e is sending full resolution photos possible via SimpleX?

Found somewhat of an answer to my question in another post. Though, it says “v5.1 will fully support for sending large files (up to 1gb) in the mobile apps.” I’m running v5.1, and when I send a photo via signal it’s size is reduced by ~50%, and via SimpleX it’s size gets reduced by ~75%. https://simplex.chat/blog/20230301-simplex-file-transfer-protocol.html

How is that left-wing?

Yeah, I thought voter fraud was a big right-wing topic recently. Poster must be confused.

ohhhh Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal. But yeah that's highly relevant for SimpleX, because it has no social graph at all. So I would not infer they are left wing, rather that they are being selective about which real world events to reference to bolster the case for their protocol design.
In fact, if you listen to this podcast interview with the SimpleX founder, I don't think you'll leave with the impression he is a left wing radical
