The Israelites of the Old Testament needed physical idols to understand God. The mental jump of a supernatural deity that exists everywhere was too great for them.
In the same way, the ideas that you can “own something” that doesn’t exist physically and only on a digital ledger without needing to trust anyone is a great mental jump for the masses.
You think people want freedom and responsibility? Noooo. Some say that, but the vast majority of people don’t actually want this.
They want an institution, a company, a person that they can trust. The mental jump is too hard, they want idols.
I am glad silvergate died, Bitcoin can’t coexist with idols - no matter how friendly they are. Perhaps it will fail without banks- but it may succeed. If however, it is co-opted by banks, it’s failure is all but guaranteed.
Banks can not co-opt bitcoin
