Rules make parenting harder but relationships better, sounds like parenting is basically a ‘tough love’ optimization problem.

Am I understanding this correct? Restricting who you kids can play/hang with can have negative effects? It's a tough one to enforce if they really likely each other.

Tough love is learning on the job. We're still finding the right balance.

The tan bar means the parent reported it was less difficult relative to the sample mean.

An oldie but a goodie. You don't need to be strict about all things but somethings you definitely should be strict about.

Pick your battles. Don't be a control freak.

Agreed.

Its actually easier to be easy. If one is selfish, which most of us are... it is harder to be the "bad guy". Giving a kid what they want is often easier in the short run. Long term though... not always great.

My theory is that we just need an excuse to push us over the edge to being too permissive. And if you had strict parents yourself and you focus on the negative consequences alone that's an easy excuse to be permissive.

Of course as with all things you can go off the shoulder on both sides.

I really think being strict in reason shows care subconsciously to a kid. Vs, the whatever attitude of permissiveness.
