Throw the essays down a flight of stairs and give the highest grades to the ones that go the farthest. The heaviest, i.e. longest ones, go farther.
Length is a proxy for quality, weight is a proxy for length, and distance is a proxy for weight. Ergo, distance is a proxy for quality.
Can you give them all A's? Hehe

Some achieved their personal best (even though they still didn’t achieve a passing grade - but that’s okay because effort matters).
