I think it's a minor league football team.
Well, I would not consider them minor team after being three times Premier League winner, 2 UEFA Cups and 1 FA Cup. It's true that their best days were a few years ago though still a historic English team with big support in Yorkshire.
Is premier league the top minor league football level?
Is it really premier when you have to send your four best teams to go play in a better league once a year? So yes it is exactly like triple A. In fact we should only describe it as such going forward.
In triple A baseball the best guys get called up to the major leagues to face better competition. In "premier league" soccer the best teams get called up to the Champions league to face better competition.
Two different things: each country has its own leagues, then there are continental contests. You cannot play in the continental contests if you have not performed really well in your local league the previous year. Best teams play at the same time in both national and continental.
That just sounds like a form of promotion.
I do like this idea but it would never work in the four major North American sports because you could send the 4 worst teams to play the best teams from other countries leagues and they would still destroy them.
Maybe NBA Europe or whatever thing the Emirates comes up with will change that
Seems akin to a two way contract in baseball. Haha.
Good point. I suppose it's mostly minor leagues, like I said initially.
I am not sure whether we have same concept with regards to what a minor league is. Premier League is the top national league in Europe , and I would dare to say in the world. German Bundesliga, Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A follow the English, with Ligue One following close. You can watch most of the top players there
I would consider middle leagues in Europe Dutch Eredivisie and Portuguese Primeira Liga. Then minor leagues in Belgium, Austria, Greece, Poland, ....
The way we use the term here, and as I understand how professional soccer is organized, the Premier League would be the UK major league and the Championship would be the highest UK minor league.
Yes! Then each country has its own top major league. Every year, worst teams are relegated to the lower league and some others from that one get promoted. In Spain, the bottom 3 teams at the end of the year in La Liga are relegated to second division. Top 3 teams from the second division are promoted to La Liga.
I know it's different from American sports where there is not relegations or promotions.
Cool. I didn't know they had those. Is it double or triple A?
I think they use pretentious and confusingly unintuitive names for their levels
How British of them.
He doesn't need to own them while he is playing. He can own whatever Leeds United is and trade in his shares for 49ers shares after they three peat and he retires.
