Interested to see what the stacker hivemind thinks of this one.
UBI has been talked about quite a bit, but apparently, now Ireland is actually doing a basic income for artists
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5yv389dnk5o
From the article, the basic gist of it is:
2,000 applicants will be selected using an anonymous randomised selection process and to be considered the person must be resident in Ireland, be a professional artist with a professional creative practice and have a creative practice which is primarily based in Ireland.
The payout is like 300 something euro a week.
Now, to me , on a basic level, i think fuck it, why not. Artists have always needed some patron and in the slopfest of ai, supporting human creation and expression is not the worst thing the gov could spend money on.
This is no different from any other state position and will have just as bad results. From every aspect, any current state parasite is already living on UBI.
Always, always look to Argentina's past to know what's going to happen. We had the same thing here for decades prior to Milei. For decades, tens of thousands of "artists" were financed by the state. It resulted in nothing but an army of entitled parasites with absolutely no talent making plays to entertain themselves (because no one would watch them) and of course, devoting fanatically to praise the state and going against the "fascist capitalism" and etc...
...why... why is the lesson never learned...
Iceland already has one of these programmes. Some insane number of "artists" are getting half, full, or quarter salary — year after year
Nordic paradise strikes again lol
Is it resulting in better art?
compared to what?!
And no, probs not. It's widely considered a right among self-respecting "artists" whose art is too important/too misunderstood to be commercially viable. The market is filthy etc
Artists be above selling their art but not above suckling the governments teat I suppose
And is it something you think is a good idea?
Maybe this is why you live in Iceland?
For the free fiat money...
Let me guess: they will only write songs about how taxation is great, vaccines are good and how we need a CBDC.
And of course Sudanese and Congolese riverdance performers will be included.
Every unemployed bum in 🇮🇪 the next day
Ireland's government is hyper rich due to multinational companies basing themselves there and paying corporation tax on profits that were not earned in Ireland.
They can afford this s***. The rest of us cannot.
It's not universal if there are eligibility requirements
true, it's called The Basic Income for the Arts, but that doesnt sound as good in a title
10% of the time, it applies every time.
I wouldn't mind free money to create art. On the other hand I probably wouldn't want my taxes going towards that either.
Universal, it's in the name for a reason. One of them is to avoid "special needs" groups attracting envy or stigma.
As if "creatives" didn't get enough subsidy with the costly enforcement of their philosophically barren "copyright." (The case is so weak they usually rely on three or more rationales for their work receiving eternal protection)
Ireland going for the culture victory, I see.
