pull down to refresh

It has been a little dead around the territory this week. But here are the top highlights.

From 8.36 to 8.38From 8.36 to 8.38

Read like a piece of micro-fiction exploring two minutes in the life of a burnt-out teacher. It gave me goosebumps actually. I always enjoy the authenticity that @cryotosensei brings to his writing and in this one, I really felt the anguish. If we solved the problem of teacher-burnout and started paying them a little better for what they do, we might just find that many other societal problems are not far downstream.

In this latest chapter @TotallyHumanWriter enumerates the many ways he had to grow as he learned the ropes of online marketing. As always, this is a just a snapshot of his gradual metamorphosis from anonymous blogger to bonafide publisher. If you haven't already, do yourself a favour and start at the beginnning

Short Story IdeasShort Story Ideas

Here is one I shared for anyone willing to take up the challenge of sharing one piece of short fiction per month. I found it reading the substack of David Freidman (yes -- that David Freidman).[1]

Territory NoticeTerritory Notice

On my monthly renewal (Jan 11th), I have decided to effect the following change to the territory.

the_stacker_muse --> ~FictionEtcetera
Readers and writers of fiction and the literary arts.

This decision comes after much thought and contemplation. It is not a reorientation, but rather an attempt to return to the initial vision: to curate a corner of SN to share and discuss fiction and creative writing. Also, I think it would make the territory more amenable to newcomers and the passerby.

If anyone (esp. the contributors here @siggy47, @plebpoet, @Kontext, @Jimmyhoneyalchemist @SatAttack @cleophas, @TotallyHumanWriter, @cryotosensei, @SimpleStacker, @jbschirtzinger) seriously objects to this change, then I am interested in hearing you out and I am open to other ideas.

Thank you all for sticking around!

I’m so touched that my humble piece gave you goosebumps and I am motivated to carve out more time to write more fiction! Thank you for caring.

I like the look of ~FictionEtcetera. ~FictionEtc looks like an incomplete thought

I like the old name, but I like the new one too. If you're like me, it was stressful changing the name of a territory, everyone seems to get used to it quickly.

Thanks.
It is somewhat. I thought of doing a poll like @BlokchainB but I am afraid of it making me less sure of myself.

reply

I support the change, tho I would question why you’d spell out etc ?

reply

Thanks! I thought it looked better.

Yeah it does look better, I agree, but perhaps less recognizable? I’m not sure. I do think it’s a move in the right direction to associate less with the platform itself and more with the topic

reply

I appreciate your input. I agree. Elsewhere ~literature and simply ~fiction were suggested.
Maybe that is a sign that ~fictionetcetera is not doing it.
~fictionetc doesn't look bad.

reply

I'm not a big contributor so don't listen to me, but I do like ~the_stacker_muse a bit better.

If the idea is to make it more easily grokkable what the territory is about, I might suggest simply ~fiction or ~literature

reply

I'll take these into consideration. Thanks!

You know I really like the idea of the stacker muse. I enjoy the idea of us being a collective of musers! I do sympathize with your goal here though, perhaps you are losing some participation from passer-byers, but I'm not so sure. Either way, I love your territory and I will continue to post in it :)

I'm a fan of the original territory name, because:

  1. It's unique & memorable
  2. It evokes a call to tap into what inspires us (or, at least it does for me, as evidenced by some of the pieces I've shared here i.e.: #1059799, #1201227, #1205254, #1289326)

But it's your territory, of course, so feel free to call it what you want, and the change makes sense especially if you want to orient it more towards the fiction side of things
