I had my first persimmons in college. Under-appreciated fruit.
One year I made the mistake of picking one from a tree too early and it made my mouth all cottony and numb lol.
I learnt that unripe persimmons are astringents during the usual wikipedia info dump while eating one 15 minutes ago lol
never wanted to ate a normal persimmon, the consistency creeps me out. so one day my grandpa brought me some “kaki mela”, which is Italian for fuyu/apple/non-astringent persimmons, and it was love at first bite! they’re as sweet as loquat imo.

What's your view on structural modeling in economics? I'm debating whether to write down a structural model of user behavior on Stacker News. Not sure if it's a worthwhile endeavor though.
I started off as a structural micro guy, but later moved away from it because they take way too long to work with, and the juice usually wasn't worth the squeeze. At a more fundamental level, no one should believe these structural models as accurate depictions of reality anyway, so why bother? Now I prefer to just focus on solid reduced form empirical results that tell a story, and I've also had better publishing success that way.
I feel similarly. When I've done anything structural it's been because I wasn't getting consistent results across similarly plausible specifications.
I almost entirely do reduced form estimation and that's what I primarily trained in. If you have a neat toy model of stacker behavior, I'd say go for it, but the incentives (and how well they're understood) don't strike me as being straightforward to model. It seems to me like you'd need to define different types of stackers and articulate the rewards system.
I would be very interested in trying to understand how closely behavior aligns with the rewards incentives, though. I've always thought that most of us are probably leaving lots of sats on the table by not optimizing.
One of the unexpected benefits of pr review/testing is testing code paths I hadn't tested in awhile and finding bugs.

1AM Thursday morning I get a knock on my door. It's my dad, and he's asking if the family dog is with me. I say no. He tells me she's missing and hurries off with a flashlight.
I get dressed, grab a couple flashlights and join my parents in the search. It doesn't take long before my dad says, "There's tons of blood. Scurrying track marks; she's gone."
I was stunned. That stupid little dog that's always barking indoors and hurting my ears, barking at nothing and barking at me when I wear odd outfits. That dog that leaves piles of shit on the lawn that I have to pick up before I mow. That dog that goes into the most annoying of attack modes and has to be locked in the other room when any of my sibling's dogs visit. With the weakest voice, my mom thanks me for helping before giving me a hug. We're both holding back tears. She slowly walks back to the house.
We trace the coyote tracks looking for remains. All we find are pools of blood soaked into the snow.
I'm never going to see the dog again and I'm choking up. Christmas 2024 was her last Christmas. The last time I pet her warm soft belly was two weeks ago after she saw me get home after a bike ride-- an unusual day when she was happy to see me. The last time I saw her was family dinner on Monday. It was just a regular day where she slurped water from her bowl and stared at me begging for a piece of chicken. It's over. That was the last time.
This dog that I didn't like much is dead, and yet I've been crying ever since. I wish I could have had some more time with her.
Damn, I felt so sad reading this... stay strong!
