Global conflict? AI? The economy? Or is it something closer to home?
Personally, I've become more of a doomer on AI. I don't think it's going to be good for humanity.
What keeps me awake is usually being kicked by either the dog or the kid.
reply
Do you sleep with them and the wifey on the same bed?!
reply
Yes, we got a great big bed when we moved because our last dog always wanted to sleep with us.
Our hope was that kid and dog would sleep in the kid's room but that hasn't panned out yet.
reply
I sleep right through that shit 9 times out of 10
reply
Me too, but the 1/10 is still the most common thing that keeps me awake.

My dude, dog in the bed is feral 😂
reply
Very much so
reply
Dude, my cat is a fucking menace. She literally won't let me sleep sometimes.

The things I've left undone, the things I haven't done properly, the things I've failed at - and keep failing at. But also, often I find myself wondering whether I'm even doing the right things to begin with, whether the path I'm walking on is my path or not. The question it all usually boils down to is how to serve the world to the best of one's abilities? And unfortunately, I don't have a great answer for that other than fuck around and find out (and each person has a different answer).

Health of family troubles me on occasion but for the most part I usually sleep fairly well.
If I can't sleep it is usually because I crashed on the couch watching something late at night and woke up realizing I hadn't taken my dog out for her last pee and by the time I do that I am wide awake for the next few hours.
That's when you will find me on SN at 4am.
reply
I usually crash on the couch when I have too much on my mind. I like the noise from the TV.

It can be a good distraction. Not the best way to sleep though.
reply
No, I usually don't feel great after doing it lol.

Caffeine.
Life is too short to worry about things outside of your sphere of influence.
The only things I lose sleep over are within my sphere of control and influence and its rare. My faith is the biggest reason I sleep well but really it's pointless to worry.
reply
I envy you.

Honestly, what keeps me awake at night isn’t just AI or the economy…it’s the thought that we might forget our humanity in the rush towards the future...
I’ve always believed art is a mirror it reflects who we are, but also who we could become. Every time a world-changing force appears (AI included), we’re given two brushes one that can paint beauty, empathy, and connection… and one that can paint fear, division, and loss. The danger is not the brush itself, but the hand that wields it...

I worry most about the economy because it's the cause of global conflict and all the AI desperation. But there's also not much to be done about the economy - imho this is inevitable given its structure.

inevitable given its structure.
Indeed. And like the weather we should respond instead of worry.
reply
too much coffee 😂
reply
I don't drink caffeine after like 10 or 11am. It keeps me up if I drink it later in the day.
reply
last call for coffee is 11am.

I sleep well. on the rare occasion I don't, it's health related (one of the kids hurt themselves during the day and now I"m worried about them)
This is not to say I'm an anxiety free person; i do plenty of fretting during the day. Just by the time I turn in, I'm almost always beat tired.

Geopolitics / global conflict. Not of the economic kind, of the my fellow human beings are getting killed because of some dumbass overlord kind.
The remedy? Work hard and after work smoke 1/8th of a blunt and pass the fuck out.
PS: which aspect of AI? The Skynet aspect or the Sam Altman aspect? Both are stuff of nightmares.

So often it's my curiosity than anything else. Some of my close ones call it overthinking but I know more about myself than they do.
reply
I never considered "overthinking" to be nearly as much of a problem as not thinking enough.

Society succumbing to entropy because there are so few Satoshi's amongst us (I don't mean Bitcoiners, I mean people willing to make the right sacrifices and design the future without the need for personal gain).
Society grows strong when old men plant trees under whose shade they will never sit.
In other words, fucking Boomers are dead weight.

doomer on AI.
I stayed up the other night and read ai-2027 Reading things, going through bouts of anxiety because I understand less of what I'm aware of but increasingly aware of more. Usually, the process of reading always pays off though.

I sleep like a baby, anxiety is just an instinct telling you that there's something within your circle of control you're abdicating... fixation over anything outside of your circle of control is just a distraction from that.
Techno-feudalism might be the closest thing I can think of relating to your concerns, but that's why Bitcoin is smack in the middle of my IKIGAI... it's very existence is a firewall against the situation the serfs of Tsarist Russia endured, a "permanent underclass"
