I honestly don't know how I feel about any of this....on the one hand I never liked Kimmel and disagreed with nearly everything he has said, on the other I don't think the "cancel wars" are sustainable for a healthy democracy.
Its only a matter of time until the other team gets in power and payback will happen.
Having said all that, lots of people pressuring a company to change course is a valid free market expression....So hard to pinpoint exactly how I feel except, 'uneasy'.

I don't think we're obliged to care when the corporate press fires one of their paid propagandists.

There it is. Yep.
Applause comedy is another word for this stuff.

I figured this was the real reason. I knew Colbert's numbers were terrible and that late night shows were down in general.

The format is dead but it could have had another few years. Trump broke these guys as he did many people.
Its still wild to watch even though its been almost 10 years now. I guess what is most wild to me is how small the index card of allowable opinion actually is. What would these clowns do with an actual radical with principle?

lots of people pressuring a company
That's the market bro. Regardless of whether we like it or not. The market isn't always good. It is amoral.
Pretty sure ABC also would not allow Kirk to speak as he did on campus either. Not good for business and advertising would not approve. The problem is when the state interjects itself.

(1) Its uncomfortable that both the left and now the right is being conditioned to fall for the "hate speech" meme and cheer for silencing people
(2) At the very same time, I honestly think Kimmel only had his job in the first place due to gov support from previous administrations. Who knows what back room deals existed between ABC Corp and Big Gov to "enable diverse and progressive" voices.

Many Republicans have zero clue or principles. There is no ideological consistency. It's being exposed. Even some of the better ones are really leftists with some specific set of moral beliefs abandoned by the Democrat party. They want to have big government and make decisions for individuals on all sorts of stuff. Some even seem to oppose free market economics.
Trump above all is not ideological let alone a conservative. He isn't a fascist. He seems to operate completely on gut and who has his ear. People project on to him their hopes and fears.

Is that the real brian stelter? I thought Brian Stelter was a big leftist

If his ratings were high, he wouldn't be 'cancelled'

I still haven't seen this. But I really don't need to. Sad to see someone go so unhinged as Kimmel has. He's a funny guy. Covid broke him.

Eh, Kimmel sucks. I never found him funny even during his stupid man show days

I agree. He was unbearable to listen to for more than 30 seconds.

Same. The best I can say for him is that we probably wouldn't have The Ringer without him, since he got Bill Simmons and his friends started in media.

Unfortunately I think late night as it stands needs to go, which is sad. Not because Kimmel was good, I certainly wasn’t a fan of him, but because the concept is something that used to unite Americans. There are becoming fewer and fewer things we can all gravitate to and share as Americans and for our culture. Things we can share a laugh over or talk about the next day at the office as friends, coworkers, and neighbors. The fewer institutions we have like that, the more the cultural fabric rips apart.

Great point. I think that’s why I’m more bullish on local communities and local churches. Life is only better when shared.

Amen, brother. Everyone talks about the problems with Gen Z, their inability to form relationships, not getting married, this and that. But I can tell you that the young people, ages 21-30 at our church are indeed having great relationships, getting married, and having children

I watched the man show growing up. Looking back on it... a show like that today would probably never be on mainstream television

I don't think he should have been canceled for that just don't know how he got passed by...but yea there's no way TMS could exist today, the amount of rage that would be directed at girls on trampolines today

God it looks so stupid to say Charlie Kirk was killed for wanting free speech then cracking down on speech everywhere.
reply
Yeah, I'm not American, so I'm probably not well-versed in what free speech means and doesn't mean, but I'm very surprised by the cheering for cancellation going on at the moment.
If a company wants to get rid of someone because of something they said, why not? Free speech does not mean the absence of consequences. But having the government go after people because they say something they don't like (even something as awful as saying murder is justified), that sounds scarily authoritarian. And from the outside, at least it seems, it's the FCC that must have put pressure on ABC (or at least, ABC acted preemptively, knowing that they needed FCC approval for something).
SNL, and most late-night hosts, suck these days, at least in terms of comedy factor. That doesn't mean they should get cancelled for saying stupid things that the current administration does not agree with.
reply
Well what you are observing is that most of the people who demand free speech really just want freedom to say what they support, but would happily censor things they don't support.
In this particular case, though, I am not really surprised ABC canceled Kimmel, since he said something that will (most likely) be proven to be an outright falsehood, it wasn't a matter of opinion. Moreover, I bet Kimmel was losing tons of money for them too.

Meh but like that’s not libel, it was speculation which was plausible based on the politics of the shooter’s family (my understanding is that he didn’t have the damning information we seem to have now.) The second part of that statement was also a fair characterization that republicans are assigning blame where they can.
reply
Fair. I don't know the context of when he said what he did and what information would have been known.
reply
Ok, I watched a video by someone I trust. The timeline is that Kimmel made his comments after it became known that the shooter had leftwing ideology. That being said, ABC didn't cancel Kimmel until after the FCC chair made threatening comments. Also, Nextar needs government approval for a merger, which may also have motivated the canceling.
Emily Jashinsky breaks down ABC’s decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel’s show after his claim that Charlie Kirk’s assassin was aligned with MAGA. She stresses that Kimmel taped his remarks after investigators had already confirmed the suspect’s radical leftist ties, making his comments knowingly reckless. Emily outlines the pressure campaign from the FCC Chair, and public, while Nexstar—seeking government approval for a $6.2 billion merger—pulled Kimmel’s show from local airwaves. She notes accusations of government intimidation but also takes into account market forces and basic ethics. Emily notes a Megyn Kelly post pointing out that ABC fired Chris Harrison for saying maybe we should judge a Bachelor contestant’s attendance (years earlier) at an antebellum party by what was considered offensive at the time. Emily frames this all as a “rebalancing” of media power.

Ah ok - thanks for pulling this together
reply
I see. Ok, maybe I didn't read in detail all the replies in this post, but it seems quite a few people here support such arbitrary censoring, kinda as a payback for past censoring of conservatives. Or maybe it's just celebratory...
reply
Haha Kimmel is kind of a jerk (and markets himself as a jerk) so I don't mind celebrating his show getting canceled.
On the other hand, when Pam Bondi said she was gonna go after private businesses for speech, most regulars here on SN were pretty against that: #1224315

Have you noticed how the US government is censoring the moderate progressive comedians instead of the far left ones? Why do Stephen Colbert and Kimmel have to go but Seth Meyers or John Oliver don't? What's up with that?
reply
It's because Colbert and Kimmel get paid more haha
