pull down to refresh

I'm surprised no one has made a post about Silksong yet, a full 5 days after its release on September 5th. I played the original Hollow Knight, but never end up beating it. My slow reflexes was giving me a hard time to beat Hollow Knight.
My son, however, is very into Hollow Knight and naturally, he was hyped for Silksong's release. The game had been baking in the Team Cherry oven for 7 years, and I would say they absolutely cooked on this one. At a price tag of $20USD or $26CAD, Silksong is providing amazing value. I bought Silksong on release to let him play it and he was having a blast. I was watching my song play and felt that I definitely need to work on my reflexes when attempting this game. But I definitely will play Silksong, as the art style is pretty, the gameplay is fluid and challenging, and the enemy design (both mobs and bosses) is top notch.

Great game, but I will be heartbroken if it takes GOTY from Expedition 33

Man, Expedition 33 is such a great game. It is still GOTY for me. I don't think Silksong can take GOTY from Expedition 33, since it's just on a whole other level in terms of story telling, dialogue, voice acting, and music. I would rank gameplay of Silksong to be on par with E33 though. Although different styles, but both fluid, smooth, and engaging.
I feel we've had a really really good year for gaming so far in 2025. To name a few great games released in 2025 that I played so far this year, Monster Hunter Wilds, Split Fiction, Schedule 1, Expedition 33, PoE2, Donkey Kong Bananza, Silksong. I want to get the Snake Easter remake on Steam too, but I need to finish some of the games I started first...

I highly recommend Expedition 33. If you will only play 1 game from 2025 or if you only have time for 1 game from 2025, let that game be Expedition 33.
The parry and dodge mechanics they added to the game makes it much more engaging than traditional JRPG.
maybe time to become professional twitch streamer?
Haha, go for it! Asmongold just took time off to take care of his dad. Big opening right there for you to fill.

I don't have time to game like I used to, but I sure am glad I played it. It's an art masterpiece. There's so much attention to detail and a level of "giving a damn" about it I haven't seen often.
And although it's not about the game itself, I like the story behind the studio coming together. Basically Ubisoft employees tired of making the same AAA slop breaking away, recruiting passionate people off forums and Soundcloud, that kind of thing... and somehow, they create something like E33.
It just makes me hopeful that such a small team (32 people + 1 dog = 33), with a fraction of the typical AAA budget, can achieve a game like that. GOTY would be well-deserved, all things considered.
As a Final Fantasy fan, I also like that they kind of proved to SquareEnix that it's possible to do a turn based JRPG that still has some modern and reactive elements and that that whole genre doesn't need to be completely thrown out as dated.
Anyway. Good game. Didn't mean to hijack a Silksong thread :P

Agree with everything you said.
Unreal Engine 5 is really turning into a cheat code for smaller developers. Technology advancements are doing wonders and allowing smaller passionate teams to create high quality "indie" games that rival the AAA standard.
I feel they can make a movie out of how this game got made. With all the quitting Ubisoft and hiring ex colleagues to make a game that they want to play themselves. Finding their music composer/director from SoundCloud and their lead writer on Reddit. To how no one was interested in funding / publishing their game, to finally securing funding and convincing Kepler to publish it.

I'm pretty sure the gamers here on SN appreciate any gaming discussion, regardless of what thread it's on :)

Indeed. As you may or may not have noticed, I'm quite into gaming and would love to have gaming discussions about any game anywhere.

Never heard of this game. Kinda feels like a mix of Mario and Sonic!

I haven't played it, but heard a lot about it.
It would be considered a Metroidvania, a platformer where you explore dungeons, fight enemies, and increase your skills and abilities as you do so
reply
Not quite a pure platformer like Mario or Sonic.
Yes, both Hollow Knight and its sequel Silksong are exactly Metroidvania games. More on the genre of Metroidvania: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroidvania
Silksong seems to be having great sales numbers + player count so far. They've topped the Nintendo Switch eShop as the #1 selling game. And also had a peak concurrent player count of 587,150 on Steam a few days ago. Pretty amazing numbers for an indie game.
