On August 26, 1998, Hal Finney gave a presentation at the Crypto 98 conference titled "A zero-knowledge proof of possession of a pre-image of a SHA-1 hash."
At the time, while theoretically known, zero-knowledge proofs were considered largely inefficient or impractical due to hardware limitations.
Finney's presentation explored the practicality of these proofs.
