Has anyone thought about identities on Bitcoin? With the ongoing rise of centralized identities and social credit scores, I've been thinking more about it and how we're going to counter it.
Of course I'm thinking of ways Bitcoin can help. I recently found out about spaces protocol.
Was wondering if anyone has any experience with it?
The claim is it's a small open source protocol that sits on top of bitcoin with minimal on chain footprint.
No separate blockchain, no separate token, no foundation. 100% Bitcoin, uses BTC as the currency. Supposed to be cypherpunk and built as freedom tech.
There's just a lot of scams out there and with the drama between core and knots not sure which way this will go, but I definitely think we need some sort of decentralized digital identity. Thoughts?
Microsofts ION is just that (identity using Bitcoin as blockchain).
I would probably never use it, but this is a relatively old idea.

identities on Bitcoin?
That's bullshit. Also these kind of "identities" are just fictional, virtual, DO NOT EXIST. Everything you do online is fictional, separate from who you are (the living man)
Saying that you, the living man, you are a bullshitID is just stupid, you simply declare yourself a dead body.
btw... a govID is not yours.... is theirs. And is not you, the living man.

I have thought about this a fair bit but not come to any solid conclusions. I think the Bitcoin network/blockchain is the perfect tool for the job allowing people to use their public key as their identity, as it is with nostr. this is for online use only, i don't see any need to doxx oneself as part of this solution.
I could see a world where people develop their reputation online using their public key as their identity. if someone posts something the world will be able to ascertain if it was truly posted by the person with the reputation or someone else pretending to be that person. in a world where deep fakes are commoditized I could see that being a use case, the importance of the bitcoin network being the source of truth is of course that it is owned by no one and can be used and trusted by anyone, as opposed to a centralized system being the arbiter of who is who.
Of course this goes against those who want to keep the bitcoin network focused on transactions rather than secondary use cases, I won't dig into that as I am not informed enough on the topic to have an opinion.
Of course the big issue here is a key pair is a tricky thing for the majority of people to manage, and while Fostr exists I have to wonder how realistic an pseudonymous identity service not run by a govt is, people are so uninformed I can't help but that that by the time a solution was robust enough for mass use and at the same time people understood their need for it, the govts of the world will have this shit even more locked down than they already do.
@freetx I have never heard of ION and very surprised to see such a thing under the MS banner, thanks for bringing it up!
and of course thanks OP for bringing up spaces, i will look at that too. For anyone else curious: https://docs.spacesprotocol.org/

Bloody hell. Bitcoin was created pseudonymous for a reason! All you need to send your money anywhere you want is your private key. Period. No permission, or ID, or tax reporting. Stop playing their games. You are a naturally free man.

I think a lot of people are missing the point, we use naming for everything. This website we're on is named. stacker news
the domain is an identity controlled by central entity.

spaces protocol is an interesting naming standard on bitcoin the design is similar to lightning network by handling most interactions off chain and only anchoring essential data on the bitcoin blockchain a lot of work remains for this protocol to succeed ill keep an eye on it

Why do you need to know my identity? Do you want to control me?

I think thats the issue with upcoming technologies , as far as you getting upside for being a early adopter theres so many risks associated.
And lets not forget that governements and the BIS has been studying how to capture its citizens using crypto for years now ( look up project mbridge)
Autonomy and privacy is even gaurenteed in the future.
