How does this compare to Unstoppable Domains, or Handshake?
I question the utility here, and really wish this were built on top of Bitcoin itself (if that's possible..)

BTC names are registered by sending a transaction to the BNS smart contract on the Stacks chain. BNS is the “Blockchain Name System”, a decentralised name registration app that can be compared to its Ethereum counterpart ENS.
The btc.us web bridge allows users to use their names as web pages. The web bridge turns btc.us into the top level domain and allows users to generate subdomains for their personal use. The web bridge is a centralized service, but .BTC names are not. In the future, there can be better support for .btc resolution in browsers.
Domains cost ~$5 USD today and renew every 5 years.
Since .BTC names are committed to the Stacks chain, there is no process to pursue a name that has been taken, other than negotiating with the owner.

How do services like BNS and ENS play with DNS? Is there a relationship?

As far as I know, browsers do not have any .eth nor .btc TLD support, so you use some web bridge service, like eth.link.
So the website hosted for vitalik.eth is accessible by any browser (as it uses simply DNS) at vitalik.eth.link

I don't know if a bridge for .btc TLD is already online, or what. (nor do I necessarily plan to use one -- that adds an unnecessary layer that probably is not secure and certainly won't perform as well as a connection that doesn't go through this bridge).
