I know the Ocean team are pro-knots as their btc node flavor, but I'm curious is there a technical reason why I have to use Knots for my miners I am running with DATUM on my start9, or is this simply a choice by the DATUM team to not allow btc core ? When I look at setting up DATUM outside of start 9 (https://ocean.xyz/docs/datum-setup), makes no reference to requiring Knots. This difference makes me think they required knots for using DATUM on Start9 for no reason other than its their preference that users use Knots :(

You shouldn't need to use Knots for DATUM. But it looks to be the case that the 'packages' they release on Start 9 requires Knots as a dependency.
I wonder if Start9 might allow you to point DATUM at Core instead and the Knots dependency is optional. I'm not sure if there are Start9 folks on SN or if any stackers are mining with DATUM.

I have tried running DATUM with start9 and using core...it does not work. So i had to switch to knots but i dont have the burning desire to filter and would rather have core running so my fee estimation is accurate for my lightning nodes. So im stuck with having to choose between the two (cant have knots and btc core running on the same server) :(

I'd reach out to Start9 for help. They are very adamant about how great their customer support is, and I suspect they're being honest.

alright, see what they say. I suspect they will say to talk with Ocean to see why.

Start9 confirmed there are some campatibility issues with template construction using DATUM and btc core together, at least from the research that they scrounged up on my behalf. So, its my guess that Ocean are optimizing the user experience for those start9 / umbrel setups by only allowing knots...then if a user wants to make it work with core its still an option for the more technically savvy that will be running their own server stack. That's my takeaway and my hope for the reasoning.

It doesn't. There's just some extra configurations you need to do with Core. I haven't seen any guides so far which is why I went with Knots.

Oh really, people have gotten DATUM to work on start9 using core? Id be curious to hear more about that. Talking with the start9 support earlier today there was not a way that they had run across.

That I'm not sure about. I'm not sure how much you can configure Core using Start9
