pull down to refresh

I've been pretty consistently walking barefoot, or wearing "barefoot" shoes, since the snow melted. I knew it was good for muscle development and helps with balance, but I hadn't noticed much change until yesterday.
I noticed that my toes are pushing with a lot more strength than they used to. I think normal shoes have such stiff soles that our toes don't really exert much force compared to the springiness from the shoe. Without that supplemental force my toes have had to pick up the slack.
hey girl, do you like strong toes?

It's supposed to be incredibly good for your arches too. Modern shoes aren't great for us at all.

... And your posture. I don't wear anything else.

I've read that, too. My arches have always been pretty strong, though.

Awesome!!
The most noticeable thing for me has been the body's entire posture. I walk straighter, shoulders in better position

I was noticing that my step pattern changed to where I'm putting less and less force on my heel. Now it's more pad-toe than heel-pad.

Nice glad to hear it! My mom, dad, and stepmom are all barefoot people. I've been a barefoot as much as possible person since birth. I have been told my feet look like dancers feet; flexible, strong, uncracked, high arches. I fully attribute that to being barefoot as much as possible.
my favorite "shoe" right now for long concrete jungle walks are Earthrunners. https://www.earthrunners.com/?pb=0 If you can stomach the price, these shoes will last 10 years + and your toes will thank you for allowing them to spread out. Sandals are convenient but having to flex your inner most two toes to keep the sandal on will cause problems long term.
I will always cherish this barefoot moment. My dad and step mom are national pool players, and I like to play too. We went to a pretty dingy bar near by once to play some pool on a nice bar-sized table. We all hand sandals on. We stopped at the bar to get some drinks and pick up our pool-balls. Right when the drinks were on tables, the balls racked, each one of us kicked our sandals off under the table at the same time. After playing pool barefoot and being used to the extra balance your toes provide playing in sandals feels asinine. So dirty bar carpets be damned, we play barefoot.

I've recently grown to despise shoes.
Aside from bras (which many women reject these days, understandably) it's the last part of the body we willingly bind up in these little unbreathable compartments
Sandals are great, toe shoes as well. Barefoot, if you can manage it, even better.

Should help your vertical. You will be ready to take on McClung in next year's dunk contest.
reply
Maybe it will at least offset some age related decline. I doubt my vertical is even half of what it once was and my knees are thankful for that.

I recently ordered two pairs for my parents. They're getting old, and worry about their feet and legs weakening, and their stability...

Bravo on the walking barefoot. I am also doing this, especially when I'm at home. I was told to this when I was playing handball and trust me your legs and toes are loving it.

It’s definitely a thing. I’ve been wearing barefoot shoes/sandals for nearly a decade. My feet are wider. My toes have much more girth.
My wife had to increase her shoe size a couple years ago because her feet also lengthened about half a size.

How did you notice your toes are pushing with more strength?
reply
Oddly enough, I noticed it while sitting with my feet in a somewhat awkward resting position under my desk that would normally have just pushed my toes back until the resistance from the sole balanced out my weight.
Rather than just being pushed all the way back my toes were supporting the weight of my legs. Then, I paid more attention to how I was walking and realized I was engaging my toes quite a bit more than normal.
Part of it is distributing more weight across all my toes, rather than just my big toes.

wow🤯 I didn't know this, so walking has helped strengthen your toes?

Walking without thick soled shoes

It could be the case that it needs a lot of steps before reaching the final step.
