Seeing If I Can Pay My Rent with Bitcoin

So here’s the thing: I’ve been living on Bitcoin for a while now. I’ve managed to pay for coffee, sandwiches, gift cards… all kinds of everyday stuff.

But one big question has been at the back of my mind: Can I actually pay my rent with Bitcoin?

This month, I finally decided to dig in and figure it out.

Here were the options I considered:

Option A: Just pay rent the usual way, directly from my bank account. Boring, but it works.
Option B: Buy Bitcoin throughout the month, then sell it back for dollars and pay rent like normal. Kinda defeats the purpose, but it’s an option.
Option C: Try out Strike’s Bill Pay feature. You link your landlord’s bank details, wait a few business days for micro-deposits, and then supposedly you can pay rent directly from Strike.
Option D: Call my landlord and straight-up ask if they’ll take Bitcoin.

And honestly… that last one made me a tad nervous. But I did it anyway.

I picked up the phone and asked my landlord if they’d ever consider accepting Bitcoin for rent. They were super nice about it, but the answer (for now) is no. Still, I’m glad I asked — you never know unless you try.

Since I am not fond of the first two options, that leaves me is to test out Strike’s Bill Pay.

Here’s how it works if you’re curious:

Open the Bill Pay tab in Strike
Copy your Strike account’s routing & account numbers
Add that info into your landlord’s payment portal
Wait for those small trial deposits
Verify them, and boom — in theory, you’re paying rent with Bitcoin (sort of).

I’ll be honest. I still haven’t successfully paid my rent entirely in Bitcoin yet. But this video was about figuring it out and sharing the process with you all.

Took me some years until I convinced my landlord to accept my sats. Now I am paying rent straight into his wallet, P2P, no other intermediary.

Exactly! This is a journey that must be shared and show to others that is possible ... if you really want to be free. Nobody says that is easy... is damn hard to achieve that level of real "living on bitcoin". Took me years and years of preparations, testing, failing, success etc... but as you said, is a journey and each one of us will have a different (more or less) experience. But that doesn't mean we should not push forward, even that is hard, and achieve that level.

I already put it out there, the person I spoke with (wish I could've included it in the actual video, it didn't come out well due to distance from camera microphone) seemed generally curious and really seemed open to talking about it more within some time.

I appreciate the alternatives, I would be interested to see if they're cheaper (regarding fees, spreads, etc.) than Strike's offering.

I suppose you are in US... for Europe there are more options (aka intermediaries), not just Strike.

The best way is to convince more people to accept it directly.

I’m going to wait until my income is predominantly in bitcoin to attempt this.

For now, I want to keep finding people who want to accept my bitcoin and do business with them.

That was my first thought, but as I kept buying more and more and converting my fiat paycheck in Bitcoin... I was like "screw it, lets do it". I am well aware of what I am doing. However, I am excited to see more people adopt the Bitcoin Standard with time.

Nothing beats Zapping Sats over the Lightning Network to another person, its honestly so sick.

I love that you’re doing this. It’s great to read about the journey and what the options are.

I just feel weird about doing so many short term transactions. We keep enough fiat for short term needs and save the rest in bitcoin.

I have been in the other position. I own a little trailer (think Trailer Park Boys) that I rent out. I have offered discounts to pay in bitcoin, and even offered to help them with setting up a payment method, but still no success.

I think your experiment is brilliant, and the initiative to document and share it with the community is very valuable.

That said, just a personal observation (in a constructive spirit): starting the video from a pool and then smoking a cigar gives a certain impression of the "good life" or a disconnect with what many in the Bitcoin standard are trying to achieve: frugality, hard work, proof of work, Stay Humble.

Maybe that's not your intention (and I understand you want to keep the style relaxed or cool), but it may not resonate with everyone, at least it left that feeling for me personally.

First I want to say thank you and that I always appreciate feedback that’s constructive. I’ll keep that in mind, I was going for the chill vibe and I just love cigars. But, I can totally see how that can come across pretentious and opposite of the core values of Bitcoiners alike. Nevertheless, I value your opinions and seriously respect it.

Thanks! I was so nervous because I have a good relationship with them. They were interested which is great and provides me with confidence that in the future they’ll accept.

I cannot lie, the house I was staying at was my fiancés family house. Beautiful paradise is so right. I live in an average apartment, but that doesn’t mean I use the law of attraction when staying with them at that house! Ha

The person to whom the place where I live is a simple person, from a poor region in the mountains of Peru.

Today he drives a building and several commercial premises, since his mother died in 2020.

It is not in a situation of necessity, and has regular income. (For the life is resolved) and there is no room to learn about these issues about the money from the Internet, or if the money it receives does not work, it serves a lot, that lives and with that money makes its expenses.

I already tried to tell him that Bitcoin existed approximately a year ago, and his gaze when I mentioned him on money on the Internet and all that was ... "This asshole wants to cheat me."

He told me: "Yes, yes, Internet money, I don't use that! I like real money in my hands where I can tell it" 😶

Wow, your writing and ability to share that story is excellent. Honestly what would make that story next level is if you “orange pilled” him… nothings perfect and that’s okay. Did you tell him that same physical cash is also melting away at the same time? Lol

Totally agree, this trip with Bitcoin, is something that just begins.

It is only enough to understand the foundations, see how much cycles we have barely transcended, understand the monetary policies of the State, visualize all the amount of money or financial instruments that accumulate value and that are still outside Bitcoin. Without a doubt, this trip just begins.
