Let me introduce you to the concept of Carbon Credits. Basically you're alloted a quota of how much carbon you can emit. This is your carbon credit (cc for short 🤓). If you emit less than your quota for a given period you can sell your carbon credit to other entities.
Why is this cool? You might think Tesla makes money off of cars, software and robots. In reality it sells its carbon credits to other automobile companies which run on fossil fuels (emit more carbon) like toyota. This rakes in billions of dollars for EV companies such as Tesla.
While this concept is mostly limited to countries(kyoto agreement) and corporate entities. It'd be cool to have an app in which you can enter your activity and it automatically calculates your carbon credit. And at the end of the month, you can sell this carbon credit to your peets for some sats. Obviously there's no way to enforce this since people can just lie about their activity but i still think it's a cool idea.
Would love to hear your thoughts about this.

There are two main kinds of carbon markets: voluntary and mandatory. Mandatory markets exist when a government passes a law that institutes a quota of emissions for covered companies (much like you describe above).
The EU ETS is the world's largest [mandatory market], covering just over a third of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions. The UK ETS went live on 1 January 2021, replacing the UK's participation in the EU ETS. Other ETSs operate in Australia, Brazil, China and, at a state level, in the US. source
Voluntary markets involve carbon credits being purchased by companies in what amounts to marketing: companies can claim to "carbon-neutral" or more environmentally friendly products and services because they have purchased offsets for the carbon produced by the company. These credits don't involve a quota. Offsets might include reforestation projects or direct air capture of carbon or many other things.
I love the idea of involving micropayments in day to day life, but I think carbon credits might be difficult to apply to individuals. Quotas in general don't work well, imo. And it feels like you'd be trapped in an endless game of whack a mole as people try to game the system.
Also, the freedom-lover in me is screaming that this would be really hard to implement without giving a ton of power to governments -- which I'm not too interested in.

TIL, thanks for explaining. I don't think it would work on an individual scale, cool concept regardless.
And Yes you're right there's no way to monitor your personal footprint without giving the government (specially the ones like EU) the rights to violate your privacy and tax you to hell for it.

I’m creating the tolerance credit — I have plenty, so I can sell you some so you can write that kind of fallacious shit made up to move fiat in exchange for easing the ‘guilt’ of idiots who believe that the rich, big corporations, and governments actually care about this. You can pay me in CC And post any kind of nonsense that I might unsuspectingly — or not — end up reading.

"Climate warming produced by humans" theorem is a scam.
You're probably scanning this forum to see if you can troll it. But you won't be able. People here are intelligent enough.

In general, a lot of people using stacker news don't regard human caused climate change as a real threat. This doesn't mean you shouldn't write about it and post about it here -- just that doing so might require some pretty thick skin. Look at it this way: it's a chance to sharpen your arguments up.
Just as many bitcoiners never leave their own bubble, many in the environmental movement don't leave theirs. Any opportunity we have to grate against each other is good, even if it creates a slightly unpleasant sound.

Even if they believed it, it makes no sense at all to create a credit system for something as meaningless as gas emissions. It’s better to spend money on gambling than on ‘carbon credits’.

holy shit are you being dense on purpose, it was an app idea for your peers not the government you retard, its like pocket change you'd give to your friends. maybe read the whole thing before going all in on the toxic maximalist roleplay.
Carbon credits are taxes, taxation is theft.
I agree with this. I also think externalities exist. By externality I mean something over which it is difficult to enforce individual property rights.
The atmosphere is such a thing. Another example might be geosynchronous orbit. FM radio frequencies are another. What is a good way to get markets working in such circumstances?
checked and regulated capitalism ~ central banking (that's in strong relation)
We want unchecked and unregulated capitalism, because the checks and regulations are evil and bring the world into the real ill condition.

no need for such strong language friend, I think they're a cool way to incentivize responsibility towards climate change. Whether they work or not is a different question.
