The making of A Tiny Inkling
Over the past few years, I have had the tiny inkling to fit my poems into a book and share it with you. It has been an entirely independent effort - with the exception that blurb.com is producing the book for me. Some of these poems I have shared already on SN and these can be found in the Poetry section of my bio. But to my mind, they should live with you, if you invite them, on a page tucked into your bookshelf.
my poems are confessional
Confessional poetry
This means the poem’s form is free and it has a central character who is “I”. In these poems, I am writing about myself, events and reflections of my life. If it is a successful poem, then the way I have expressed myself within it will translate to you, so that my “I” you might read as your “I”. That you may be able to find yourself in it, and you wouldn’t need to know anything about me at all because that knowledge would be superfluous. (And this is the pursuit of art in general.) Confessional poetry is unique in that it is like a page taken out of a diary, but elevated in language and form (at least this is the aim).
I write confessional poems to express myself. I write to make use of something that I used to feel much more stongly than I do now: potential. I write to add my voice to the catalog of poets who gave me the fondness I have for literature, and speak with them beyond their graves (they live large in my head though I have danced around their headstones).
but what’s the use??
It’s a vulnerable thing to share your own poems. I try not to take them so seriously. They don’t have any power. They serve no purpose. I do not care what happens to them once they are released. But I think, like in the setting I described here, I would be happy to discover something like this book out in the world. It would give me a warm feeling to know that someone had gone through the effort of carefully placing their hopes and fears inside the clumsy confines of language, just for me to stumble upon. It’s a vulnerable thing, but within it is a warm embrace. So I make the thing I would like to see, and that feels somewhat purposeful.
about preordering
Preordering tells me how many books I should buy from the producer. It also gives me a way to contact you so we can conduct the sale peer to peer. I expect the final cost of one book to be around $15.00.
Thank you! I'm very excited to share this little volume!
