My wife has decided to start cooking with beef tallow. I'm pretty ignorant about all this stuff. It seems pretty pricey. Does anyone know of a good, reasonably priced US source?

I attempted to render my own tallow following various blog posts on the internet. (I always trim off my fat from beef and save it in the freezer). It made a pretty nice jar of fat (but it also made the house smell a little). I didn't get it pure white, but neither did it have a strong flavor of beef.

Just call the meat department at your grocery store a day ahead and ask them to set aside some suet for you.
I have no problem getting 10lbs at a time, the expensive store charges me $2/lb raw. We render it in a crockpot then refrigerate bricks of it.
One store a little further away has it in the meat fridge already, pre-rendered in vac bags for about the same price.

I've been buying some off amazon. But cant fully vouch for its quality. Seems a bit too pure and white.....previously I would also buy rendered pig fat from local store and it has more of a offwhite / grey color with tiny bits in it (looked more natural).
Having said that, I really like cooking french fries in beef tallow.
