As [DIDx](https://www.didx.co.za/index.html) notes, the internet was built without an identity layer, which is more of an obstacle where state bureaucracies are weak. That’s why DIDx has been helping people in such emerging markets to obtain reliable and secure digital identities, and once you have stable digital identities, adding payment functionality is a natural step. Looking back on their experience with the Breez SDK, DIDx had this advice for incoming freshmen: “Give it a go. It’s surprisingly fast to get started, and the developer experience is top-notch.”

Bitcoin is the world’s only global currency, but *global* should mean more than just geography. If a technology is only available to those with family offices and concierge accounts, it won’t disrupt very much, even if it’s available in 190+ countries. Before opting for the nodeless SDK, the Sorted team looked at a range of other alternatives. They considered delegating channel and liquidity management to an LSP, but those issues are now simply expected to be obfuscated from the UX. You don’t get any bonus points for that. Like so many other developer teams, they were looking for the easy and frictionless experience of a custodial app with the autonomy and light regulatory footprint of self-custodied bitcoin.

Breez is teaming up with Lightspark — making it even easier for developers to bring self-custodial Lightning payments into everyday apps and services.

We’ve just announced a new implementation of the Breez SDK on Spark — a Bitcoin-native Layer 2 built for speed, settlement, and scale. This implementation brings everything developers need to power Lightning payments: bindings for all major languages, support for LNURL and Lightning addresses, and more — unlocking new ways to use Bitcoin as a global, permissionless currency across use cases like streaming payments, monetizing social apps, in-game currencies, cross-border remittances, and AI micro-settlements.

Another month, another 100,000 people with access to Lightning.

In May, more apps went live with the Breez SDK — bringing real-world Bitcoin payments to even more people around the world.

First up: Klever went live. With 100,000+ users across Brazil, Nigeria, India, and beyond, Klever’s mission is to make crypto accessible in underbanked regions. ## Breez Around the World (In 31ish Days)

From pasta to panels, the Breez team’s been busy — spreading the word on what’s next for Bitcoin payments.

We kicked off May with our annual team offsite. The team made the trip to Italy, where we mapped out plans, ate incredible food, and attended the (excellent) Tuscany Lightning Summit. The summit brought together the brightest builders in the space to discuss the future of Bitcoin and Lightning — all in the picturesque seaside town of Viareggio. Bitcoin, Lightning, and pasta — wonderful.

Later in the month, Umi and Roy flew to Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas, with Roy taking the stage twice during the 3-day Bitcoin extravaganza. First, he joined a panel on the latest developments in Lightning, moderated by Jordi Montes (Fewsats), followed by a conversation on Bitcoin’s evolution from digital gold into an everyday currency, moderated by Stephan Livera.

## 1. WASM support
Nodeless now supports WebAssembly, so apps can now add Bitcoin payments directly into browsers and node.js environments.

To make WASM happen, we’ve made major improvements across the SDK.

WASM-Compatible SDK Core
We updated the 𝚜𝚍𝚔-𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚖𝚘𝚗 crate to work in WASM environments by:
→ Integrating a WASM-compatible gRPC client using 𝚝𝚘𝚗𝚒𝚌_𝚠𝚎𝚋_𝚠𝚊𝚜𝚖_𝚌𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚝
→ Implementing custom DNS resolution for WASM
→ Refactoring the internal REST client to remove non-WASM-compatible dependencies
→ Introducing a new 𝚜𝚍𝚔-𝚖𝚊𝚌𝚛𝚘𝚜 crate for shared macro support across platforms

New WASM-Specific Crate
We added a dedicated WASM interface using 𝚠𝚊𝚜𝚖-𝚋𝚒𝚗𝚍𝚐𝚎𝚗, with custom type and callback handling to provide a smooth developer experience.

Flexible SDK Customization
 The new 𝙻𝚒𝚚𝚞𝚒𝚍𝚂𝚍𝚔𝙱𝚞𝚒𝚕𝚍𝚎𝚛 makes it easy to configure SDK components:
 → Includes platform-specific filesystem abstractions
 → Supports persistent storage in both Web and Node.js environments

SQLite and Cache Handling
 Since traditional databases are challenging in WASM, we:
 → Use an adapted in-memory SQLite setup via 𝚛𝚞𝚜𝚚𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚎
 → Added a custom persistent watcher to handle state

Background Tasks & System Adaptations
We implemented WASM-friendly alternatives for:
 → Background task spawning
 → Interval management
 → Accessing system time

Alternative Blockchain Data Sources
 Electrum isn’t viable in-browser, so we:
 → Integrated support for 𝚆𝚊𝚝𝚎𝚛𝚏𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚜 as a lightweight blockchain data source

WASM-Ready Boltz Integration
 → We refactored the Boltz swap client to be fully compatible with WASM environments.

gRPC-Web Proxy Support
 All gRPC-based services (e.g., Breez Server and real-time sync):
 → Now support 𝚐𝚁𝙿𝙲-𝚆𝚎𝚋 proxies
 → Enabling full connectivity from browser environments

## 2. Lower Minimum Send/Receive Amounts

We’ve significantly lowered the minimums for sending and receiving payments with the Breez SDK - Nodeless.

You can now:
> ➡️ Send from just 21 sats
> ⬅️ Receive from just 100 sats

## 3. Pay Fees with Non-Bitcoin Assets

Users can now pay fees without using Bitcoin — instead paying fees with other assets like USDT.

A smoother UX for your users — more flexibility for your app.

🔨 Consolidated Lightning and BTC address receive options into a single screen, as well as fixing the localization issue for the default Lightning address.
