Antlers exhibit the fastest bone growth among vertebrates, and to support this high growth rate, these structures are richly supplied with blood (and therefore nutrients and oxygen) through branches of the superficial temporal artery.


The extremely high growth rate of antlers can reach 2.75 cm/day and reach 15 kg in mass and 120 cm in length in just ~3 months. In moose, the antlers can weigh up to 30 kg!


In general, deer antlers are regenerated annually in the spring, when the hardened structure is lost, and then grow rapidly in the summer and undergo ossification in the autumn, after which the covering skin (velvet) is removed.


The growth cycles of antlers are controlled by androgens and immune factors, particularly macrophages.


And don't confuse antlers with horns. Horns in mammals are keratinous structures that surround a bony core and are permanent (they don't fall off and regenerate periodically). Bovids, for example, have horns.

These octopuses are toxic both when biting with their keratinous beaks (attack) – injecting TTX-laden saliva in the process – and when consumed (defense). They are the only known octopus species capable of delivering lethal bites to humans.


A minimum amount of 1.5 mg of tetrodotoxin (TTX) is lethal to humans, and death can occur within 17 minutes.

Although it is not in its natural habitat, where this group of crickets comes out at night and returns during the day to its characteristic silken shelters among the leaves.

Why is it building shelter in the person's hand? I believe that, for the cricket's nervous system, the hand functions like a folded leaf or a crack in a plant. It doesn't know it's a hand, it doesn't understand the context, it's not "interacting" with the human.

He is simply executing a very ancient biological program: "I am in a place that seems safe, so I build a shelter," because he feels protected, which they do naturally in their habitat among the leaves.

If it was raised in captivity from a young age, this further reinforces the behavior in the hand. The urge to weave doesn't disappear without the right environment, because instinct doesn't need a perfect setting to manifest itself.

I believe that a half-open hand offers the same physical stimuli as a refuge: stability and protection. It doesn't recognize a human hand; it only responds to what its body was designed for: to weave shelter, to protect itself.
