Ultima Online, pre-Trammel. When macro'ing wasn't as widespread.
Nothing after that came even close.
I still remember the first time my brother and I ran from a PK and survived to tell the tale. The risk of actually losing stuff when dying just added a whole new level to the game itself.

Tetro tiles is one of my favorite old school video games, I still play every single day. The best thing is that you can earn some Bitcoin playing the game as well.
